Morning
by Patricia Chaffee

Take all that tumbles from your dreams
to breakfast, let toast and marmalade
soak the jumble, making no attempt
to sort, to break confusion into
categories. Tuck your napkin
under your chin lest you dribble
meaning on your tie. Trust the coffee
freshly brewed and the feel of newsprint.
Just before you leave for work
check your wallet for cash, cards,
your children's pictures, and the terror
that sliced through your sleep.
