In My Family
by Karen Stromberg

grandfathers and fathers depart early
go off into the world, or beyond,
doing whatever grandfathers and fathers do.

And, as it turns out, brothers also
leave early and move completely
into the isolation of their own lives.

Left behind, a society of women
relish their empty dominance of space--
lavish all they have on what is left.

And soon, they learn that sons too
step out into the world,
and it closes behind them.
