Folk Art
by Laurie Joan Aron

Dilation and curettage,
eyes opened wide to the technique
of surgically-assisted menstruation,
uterus palette-knifed to smooth the surface.

A minor exhibit in a small side gallery,
a minor work of eight weeks' effort.

But that didn't stop me
from gathering a glob of unformed clay
to snuggle into unpieced quilt scraps
and bury under the peach tree,

that peach tree from which the children
are always stealing the fruit before it's ripe.
